standard for New Orleans boutique luxury hotels! The original St. James opened its doors in 1859 and though it
changed hands several times, continued to welcome guests throughout the latter half of the 19th century. During
this time, noted New Orleans architect James Feret began work on Baroque influenced building behind the hotel,
which would become the Board of Trade. The hotel, in its heyday, was described in one newspaper article as "one
of the grandest hotels in the Confederate States". The union Army however, may have been responsible for its
greatest fame. After occupying the city during the Civil War, troops converted the stately hotel into a military
hospital. Legend has it that this was the famous "St. James Infirmary" immortalized in New Orleans' blues history.
Another story has it that one of the current first floor guest rooms was used as a meeting place for early plotters of
the Texas Revolution.
